Since Wiener Lokalbahnen are operators of critical infrastructure providing public transport in the Vienna metropolitan area, the operations are maintained. The psychological and physical stress is however very high.
Numerous organisational measures have been taken to reduce contacts, increase safety distances while performing the usual services. Wiener Lokalbahnen formed separate teams in the maintenance of vehicles and infrastructure, as well as in the handling of traffic. All people who can work from home are already ordered to do so.
As the situation is extremely uncertain, Wiener Lokalbahnen will have to deal with a massive investment deficit by next year. The handling of necessary construction sites along railway lines is currently only to a limited extent possible, and will likely remain in this situation for the foreseeable future. Numerous projects planned for this year have now been delayed. The top priority at the moment is only to maintain our operational readiness and reliability towards passengers, which are currently urgently needed in supermarkets, hospitals and many other important facilities.
Although Wiener Lokalbahnen is currently spared from extensive financial damage, numerous partner companies and service providers will face financial problems. An EU-wide, committed rescue package is definitely needed to strengthen the European economy again.
