On 28 June, CEEP held the third edition of the Public Services Summit, which featured the participation of, among others, Donald Tusk, President of the European Council, Valdis Dombrovskis, European Commission Vice-President for Social Dialogue and the Euro, Klaus Welle, Secretary General of the European Parliament and Wilhelm Molterer, Managing Director of the European Fund for Strategic Investment. The following day, the General Assembly approved our key messages to feed the reflection on the Future of Europe.
This newsletter will primarily be focused on this contribution, which is a package composed by 5 CEEP opinions:
- CEEP Response to the Commission White Paper;
- CEEP Opinion on the Reflection Paper on Future of Social Europe;
- CEEP Opinion on the Reflection Paper on Future of EMU;
- CEEP Opinion on the Reflection Paper on Globalisation;
- CEEP Opinion on the Reflection Paper on Future of EU Finances.
Resolutely optimistic on a joint European future, CEEP prepared this package relying on the contributions from our members and the discussions held during the Public Services Summit. Our commitment to contribute to the discussions on the Future of Europe comes with the recommendation to render the reflection as inclusive as possible. Europe is not only “Brussels”, and we now need to give back ownership of the EU project to citizens.
With the European Commission’s 5 scenarios as a starting point, CEEP sees the Future of EU as a combination of 3 of the scenarios: “Carrying on”, “Doing less more efficiently” and “Doing much more together”, depending on the issues addressed. You can find more details on our position on the following page.
Finally, CEEP recalled the key role played by SGI employers and providers in improving the performance of public administrations and enterprises, and how the daily operations of our members are central to cope with the challenges of the changing socio-economic models and safeguard EU competitiveness. We see 5 key priorities to reach that goal:
- Bring the Acquis Communautaire for Services of General Interest to life: Acquis+;
- Put SGIs at the heart of sustainable growth;
- Foster social and territorial cohesion;
- Support SGIs providers in innovation;
- Unleash investments.
The next step on the debate on the Future of Europe will be the State of the Union, when President Juncker will address the European Parliament on 13 September 2017. We hope to see our reflections and views reflected then.
In the meanwhile, I wish you a good read and a pleasant summer. CEEP newsletter will come back in September.
